    Comments Turned Off

I'm getting too many spamming comments, so, sadly, the only way to prevent that is to completely turn off comments. Sorry about that!

    A Low-Level Look at ASP.NET Architecture

"Many developers are familiar only with the high-level .NET frameworks like Web Forms and Web services that sit at the very top level of the ASP.NET hierarchy. This article discusses the lower-level aspects of ASP.NET and explains how requests move from Web Server to the ASP.NET runtime and then through the ASP.NET HTTP pipeline to process requests."

That reminds me that I need to do something fun and program-y with Google Maps...maybe the capitals quizzes?

    Folder Names You Can't Use

I ended up Googling this topic because another MCT had posted wondering why he couldn't create a new folder called "con". Turns out it's a reserved name (from the days of DOS - "con" is short for "console").

Here are some of the names that you can't use to name folders or files:

    CON, PRN, AUX, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9.

    Beta Max

Max relies on the WinFX CTP for installation. I've downloaded it and installed it. Apparently I have to convince others to download and install it, as well, if I wish to use it to share pictures.

    If I get a bunch do I get a pink laptop?? :-D

Using the Geek Versions of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

(Even Though All Coding Is For Fun ;-)

"The Coding4Fun Developer Center was built by a few of us at Microsoft who also consider ourselves hobbyist developers on the nights and weekends. We built this site in our spare time, on a shoestring budget, with a whole lot of passion for giving back to the hobbyist developer community. We have signed up several awesome bloggers and writers who will be contributing regular articles to the Coding4Fun columns you see in the left-hand navigation menu. We’ll also link to some of the coolest projects and hobbyist news happening in the community."

    Security Advice from Gmail

Best one: "Don't use a password that is listed as an example of how to pick a good password"

    Hmmm...like "Luv 2 Laf"? ;-)

     How safe is your password?

The first step in protecting your online privacy is creating a safe password - i.e. one that a computer program or persistent individual won't easily be able to guess in a short period of time. To help you choose a secure password, we've created a feature that lets you know visually how safe your password is as soon as you create it.

Tips for creating a secure password:
    • Include punctuation marks and/or numbers.
    • Mix capital and lowercase letters.
    • Include similar looking substitutions, such as the number zero for the letter 'O' or '$' for the letter 'S'.
    • Create a unique acronym.
    • Include phonetic replacements, such as 'Luv 2 Laf' for 'Love to Laugh'.
    Things to avoid:
    • Don't use a password that is listed as an example of how to pick a good password.
    • Don't use a password that contains personal information (name, birth date, etc.)
    • Don't use words or acronyms that can be found in a dictionary.
    • Don't use keyboard patterns (asdf) or sequential numbers (1234).
    • Don't make your password all numbers, uppercase letters or lowercase letters.
    • Don't use repeating characters (aa11).
Tips for keeping your password secure:
    • Never tell your password to anyone (this includes significant others, roommates, parrots, etc.).
    • Never write your password down.
    • Never send your password by email.
    • Periodically test your current password and change it to a new one.

Programming For Kids (and Proof That Computers Are Male ;-)

Now, just substitute "men/man" for "computers/computer" in the following quote:

"Computers are very good at following instructions, but they must be told what to do very precisely, and using logic that the computer understands."

    :-D

    W3 Schools

"At W3Schools you will find all the Web-building tutorials you need, from basic HTML and XHTML to advanced XML, Multimedia and WAP."

They also have an extensive reference library as well as code examples and quizzes (hey, it's a school...)

    Overloading Pronunciations

"Microsoft announced Visual Studio Tools for Applications (VSTA) at Wednesday's PDC keynote. VSTA is a .NET version of its Microsoft's application scripting tool, Visual Basic for Applications, the same programming engine that let you customize Microsoft Office in the pre-.NET era."

Perhaps it's just me, but "VSTA" sure is begging to be called "Vista". I'm guessing the intent to have it pronounced "Vee Ess Tee Ay", but just like there were folks who naively called DOS "Dee Oh Ess", I'm sure some confusion will ensue.

    Book 'em, Danno...

I still feel like I don't have .NET 1.1 mastered, let alone all this new 2.0/Whidbey/Visual Studio 2005 stuff.

And now we've got Orcas and Hawaii out there, lurking in the not-so-distant waters??? Arghhh!! :-)

I suppose change is inevitable, but, wow, let me catch my breath!
